PGH.AI brings together a diverse and welcoming community of experts and novices alike to engage in a wide spectrum of topics (including research, education, ethics, policy, workforce, robotics, arts, and more), in hopes that together, we can help Pittsburgh truly fulfill its potential as a world leader in responsible AI. The team at PART has involved in the UN AI for Good initiative since the inaugural AI for Good Global Summit in 2017. AI for Good is the UN’s leading platform for dialogue on AI, and has served as the convening point for stakeholders from more than 40 UN agencies and 120 countries. In 2018, we invited Pittsburgh’s Mayor William Peduto to the Summit to speak on Pittsburgh’s role and commitment as an AI for Good city. In 2019, PART collaborated with the District 3 Innovation Center to co-host a full-day “AI for Good in Cities” workshop track, jointly led by the cities of Montreal and Pittsburgh.

PART is excited to support and participate in the AI Commons, a global platform that coordinates “problem owners,” data repositories, AI practitioners, and test environments around the world, to develop, replicate, and scale AI-driven approaches to the world’s most pressing challenges. PART is responsible for managing Pittsburgh’s role as an AI Commons “Living Lab,” alongside other labs in Montreal, Paris, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Tanzania, and San Francisco.

PART is proud to partner with the XPRIZE Foundation, a nonprofit organization that develops and implements large-scale global incentive competitions to crowdsource solutions to the world’s grand challenges. Since 2016, PART’s Executive Director, Kenny Chen, has served as an XPRIZE Ambassador for the $5M IBM Watson AI XPRIZE and the $10M ANA Avatar XPRIZE, recruiting over a dozen Pittsburgh-based teams, and supporting over 30 teams nationally. In the AI XPRIZE, Pittsburgh tied with Montreal as the two cities with the most teams. Of the eight Pittsburgh teams that started in the competition, three currently among thirty total semifinalists. They are Behaivior, Clean Robotics, and Marinus Analytics.

PART is working with the Pittsburgh Technology Council and partners from Boston and Montreal to develop an AI supercluster across the three cities, with the intent of increasing the flow and attraction of talent, investment capital, and collaborative initiatives, so as to support and brand the region as the most preferable hub for AI and robotics. As its first initiative, the AI Triangle will launch a tri-city AI accelerator program (non-resident, no funding/equity) in 2020. The AI Triangle is also exploring opportunities to facilitate collaborative research, standards development for ethical AI.
